The month of Ramadan is a time of spiritual renewal for its observers. During this time Muslims throughout the world observe a strict daily fast (sunrise to sunset) and participate in pious activities such as charitable giving and peace-making. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims enjoy a joyous three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Fast-Breaking. The dates for Ramadan and Eid (pronounced “eed”) change each year based on the lunar calendar. This year Ramadan begins May 26 and Eid is expected to begin June 25.
On the first day of Eid, Muslims gather early in the morning in outdoor locations or mosques to perform the Eid prayer. After the Eid prayer, many visit family and friends and enjoy special activities.
Interfaith Outreach serves 70-80 Muslim families who are valued members of our community. We would like to be able to help these families celebrate their special religious holiday, just as we help other clients celebrate their special December holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah. Major holidays are times when parents want to provide special gifts and activities for their children. This creates stresses for families who struggle financially.
In conversation with Interfaith Outreach clients who celebrate Eid, we learned that one of the expenses that come up for families is admission to fun, family-friendly activities—a traditional way to spend the day. Our clients specifically noted Valleyfair and Nickelodeon Universe as common locations their children enjoy. Last year we piloted a special campaign to provide tickets for these attractions. The reaction of our Muslim families was delighted gratitude for the gift and appreciation for our recognition of their important holy days.
Once again, we are partnering with our friends at the Northwest Islamic Community Center to provide this celebration opportunity for Muslim families served by Interfaith Outreach.
Please consider making a donation by June 9 to help our Muslim families celebrate Eid this year. Interfaith Outreach will pool donations and purchase gift cards, at a bulk and discounted rate, to the venues mentioned above, for distribution to participating families.
Your gift will make Eid a special holiday to remember for a special child this year.
