When the automotive industry was hit hard, layoffs began. I had worked for a dealership for almost 10 years, but I wasn’t spared. Suddenly I had no job, no income, no health care.
I started a job search, but all the dealerships were in the same predicament. After 9 months, I still didn’t have a job. I got behind in my rent and we had a family crisis. I found myself the sole supporter of my 8-year-old son.
I spent hours at Hennepin County, working my way through the system. It wasn’t enough. Things were getting worse.
My landlord suggested I go to IOCP. My case manager listened and helped me make a plan.
I also learned that IOCP had an Employment program. They helped me create a professional resume. I learned how to job search, where to look for jobs, and how to conduct myself and what to say in an interview. I did everything they suggested.
Then, 5 months later, I was hired at a tire company. Recently I was promoted to regular full-time warehouse manager. Now I have a career, benefits, and stability.
IOCP made it possible for me to turn my life around, and did it with dignity, support, and concern.
