Area businesses are stepping up to meet the food needs of people in the community.
Mosaic, a global provider of crop nutrients, helps the world grow the food it needs. “Our employees are passionate about volunteering, so a giving garden is a logical project for us to take on,” said Nick Schmidt, manager of community engagement for Mosaic.
About 50 employees volunteered more than 250 hours supporting the garden effort.
WestHealth, an urgent care center in Plymouth and neighbor of Mosaic, provided a 40’ x 100’ plot of land for the garden. Greenside Inc., a landscape design and construction firm in Savage, prepared the site and installed a walking path.
Based on IOCP Food Shelf needs, Mosaic grew potatoes, onions, carrots, tomatoes, beans, and zucchini, as well as peas, cabbage, peppers, and cucumbers.
“We produced at least 1,000 lbs. of fresh produce for IOCP throughout the growing season,” said Schmidt.
“Hunger is a serious and ongoing issue in our communities and access to fresh, wholesome produce is an ongoing challenge reported by many food shelves,” he added. “We are fortunate to have a great partner like IOCP to work with to ensure the food is distributed to those who need it.”
