The month of Ramadan is an intense time of spiritual renewal for its observers. During this time Muslims throughout the world observe a strict daily fast (sunrise to sunset) and participate in pious activities such as charitable giving and peace-making. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims put on their finest clothes and enjoy a three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Fast-Breaking. The dates for Ramadan and Eid (pronounced “eed”) change each year based on the lunar calendar. This year Ramadan begins May 15 and Eid is expected to be celebrated on June 14-16.
On the first day of Eid, Muslims gather early in the morning in outdoor locations or mosques to perform the Eid prayer. After the Eid prayer, many visit family and friends, give gifts (especially to children) and enjoy special activities.
Interfaith Outreach serves 75 Muslim families who are valued members of our community. We are happy to help families celebrate a special religious holiday, just as we help families celebrate special religious holidays in December. Both Christmas and Eid are times when parents want to provide special gifts and activities for their children. It is traditional for families to buy new clothes in honor of the Eid holiday. In fact, for many families this may be the only time of year when new clothes are purchased.
In an effort to ease the financial stress felt by struggling families over the Eid holiday, with your help, Interfaith Outreach will provide:
- Gift cards for family-friendly activities at Valleyfair or Nickelodeon Universe
- Gift cards to JCPenney and Kohl’s Department Stores
Our goal is to raise $9,000 for this special effort. Donations received by Friday, May 25 are deeply appreciated.
Here are two easy options to give:
- Pick up a gift card ($20 increments, please) at your neighborhood JCPenney or Kohl’s department stores. Drop off gift cards at Interfaith Outreach by Friday, May 25.
- Donate online by selecting “Eid Holiday Gift Program” from the drop-down menu. We will purchase gift cards and distribute them in time for the holiday.
Thank you for sharing this special holiday joy with our neighbors!
